At First United Methodist Church, we embrace families of all sizes and forms. We believe that families are the primary place where faith formation takes place. We are committed to providing resources and tools for parents and other adults to nurture the faith of their children. Throughout the year we have special opportunities for children, pre-teens and teens to gather with their parents for times of fellowship, conversation and sharing. Our activities often include opportunities for families to volunteer and serve together. As a congregation we are committed to minister to the need of the children and youth in our congregation and in our community. We provide special opportunities for children and youth through our special programs, mission events, summer Peace Camp and more.

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them,

for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

-Matthew 19:14

Children’s Chapel – Kids’ Own Worship

Worship services are an option for children’s participation in any way their families choose. Children can stay with their families or attend Children’s Chapel – Kids’ Own Worship.  Care for infants and toddlers is available from 9:30 am to 11:30 am in our professionally-staffed nursery.

Sunday School classes, offered for children from preschool-age through 8th grade, meet during a part of the worship service, after the Children’s sermon in the Chapel. Students gather together for worship and story before being dismissed to individual classes. Children are assigned to class by age, providing age-appropriate lessons meaningful to their life experience.

The Children’s Choir presents a variety of music during worship service on a regular basis. They rehearse on Sunday mornings at 9:30 am. Older children and youth take an active role in Sunday worship as acolytes and scripture readers. Our Director of Christian Education oversees the Sunday School curriculum, teaches classes for children and youth, and conducts special events.  We value the developing leadership of our children and youth and nurture it in every way possible.

Confirmation Classes are another step in faith development and personal growth. Students in 7th and 8th grade are invited to participate in these classes as they grow and mature in Christian faith. Classes meet weekly for one year on Sunday evenings. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of learning experiences, which include field trips, retreats, and mission events. At the end of this journey, students will be invited to make the decision to profess their faith in Jesus Christ, claim the name of “Christian,” and join in church membership.
