This is a "gift" that I'm really good at. Actually, more than one family member has said that I have managed to turn getting lost into an art form. (Not when it comes to maps -- I'm actually fairly good with maps.) But when it comes to losing myself in a book -- I did actually miss a tornado once when it was just a mile away. As a child, I would run away often -- but just to the end of the block to sit under a tree. I wasn't allowed to cross the street! When life is "too much with us," going away from reality seems like a good idea to me. To lose oneself into something bigger than we are seems like a good way to respond to darkness, confusion, and conflict. The mystery of God may be the best way of all to lose ourselves. Then "getting lost" is indeed a precious gift!
