Worship Notes for Feb. 3rd

Our lives are shaped what has given us roots and what has provided our wings. This week we start our consideration of the things that give us wings.

Our text from Isaiah 40 is one of the most evocative scriptures in the entire prophetic canon. Perhaps in part because we all feel tired and weary and the promise here is one we long for.

The Lord gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and the young stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Is.40:29-31.

You may have heard inspiring songs based on this text. If you have been at an Eagle Scout ceremony, they often use the song "On Eagles' Wings" as a musical connection to the lifting up of the scout to the rank of Eagle Scout. Or perhaps you have heard and been inspired by the song, "You Raise Me Up" sung by Josh Groban (and a few other people as well).

Consider the people, groups, and scriptures that raise you up. This Sunday we turn from our consideration of our roots to those things that give us wings -- that help us to fly. Photo by Jazmin Quaynor on Unsplash
